Finding a new instrument can be difficult, considering that the instrument “chooses” the person who plays it. Sebastian Penso needs a better flute that will better fit his style of playing and improve his overall performance capabilities, which is why this fundraising recital came to be.

Sebastian’s music career started when he was 9 years old with choir, where he worked hard to get into the LCISD Elementary Honor Choir two years in a row. He also played violin at the time and was a part of the swim team at YMCA, he has done swimming since he was 3 years old. After 5th grade he also started piano lessons. He switched from violin to flute in 2013 when he started band in 6th grade at Wertheimer Middle School. After auditioning for the Briscoe Junior High band program, he got put into the Honor Band and has been in the top bands at school ever since. He made region band for the first time in 8th grade (2015-2016). The following year, in 9th grade, he made the freshman region band and advanced to area. Then, this year, in 10th grade, he made the Symphonic (top) region band and advanced to area. Most importantly, with hours of practice and countless lessons, he achieved his goal of making the Texas State 5A Band, where he placed 11th, with a lot of help from all his directors but especially, Erich Sonnier, Christopher Crummel, Thomas Piazza, Erin Hicks, and his private lesson flute teacher Lauren Kavanaugh.

In this recital, we have prepared approximately 50 minutes of music that have brought Sebastian to this point, along with other music played by Verena Stegemann and Lauren Kavanaugh and a trio with flute players Haley Youngblood and Auxil Perez.

The recital repertoire includes:

Movement 1 of Poulenc’s Sonate

Joueurs de Flute pour Flute e Piano Mvmts. 1,2 and 3

Grand Trio for Three Flutes Beethoven

Frederich Chopin Nocturne op. 9 No. 2

George Harrison, arr. Peter Bence “Here comes the sun”

Mozart Flute Concerto in G
